Why are cop shows that kick-ass and don't bother to take names, as well as violating numerous civil rights so popular? But heaven forbid, a real-life policeman smacks someone upside the head while arresting them for a real crime; then the community is up in arms.

I don't know. I can't stand all of those "Law & Order"s for precisely that reason. For me, the one exception is "The Shield" because the cops are actually debating if they are vilolating Civil Rights -- sometimes they choose to do it anyway and sometimes they get in trouble. Much better than the whole mentality of my-gut-says-he's-the-bad-guy-so-convict-him-by-any-means-necessary.
The problem I have with these shows is that all the nitwits on our police departments are pattering themselves after these characters. Hence we see all the problems we are having between the police and citizens.
We need to go back to the old Irish cop walking his beat twirling his baton; rather then the gunge ho, take no prisoners attitude of many of today's policeman.
Amen.
It's all Clint Eastwood's fault.
